Professional Activities
To enrich the professional facet of our student body, the BCSO often organizes and participates in Academic & Professional Events such as the Pioneering Biological Discovery seminar series. We also volunteer for community projects such as the Galveston Beach Cleanup and Holiday Toy drive. A description of these events is documented under Academic and Community Welfare Activities below. .
Other Activities
To help endure the stress of Graduate School, we sometimes get together to party, relax and just have fun. Under Social Activities you will find student written testimonials of these events.
Pioneering Biological Discovery
Sponsored by the Sealy Center for Structural Biology
and the department of Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology, this seminar series allows students to select and welcome investigators involved in
cutting edge science to our campus. Many visiting scientists admire the fact that students organize
and schedule the entire experience. This makes for a great environment for exposition of new ideas
and presentation of new science.
Galveston Beach Cleanup 2008
UTMB's bi-annual beach clean up was once again a "filthy" success! UTMB's strategic location on an island gives us special opportunities to spread environmental awareness by participating in community based programs such as the Adopt-A-Beach drive.
Galveston County Science and Engineering Fair 2011
A group of BCSO students volunteered to judge in the annual Galveston County Science and Engineering Fair. This is a high-school level science fair representing the students of Galveston county, and organized in part by UTMB.
Holiday Toy Drive 2010
Each winter the BCSO gives back to our community by raising funds for underprivileged children,
to provide them with presents during the holiday season. As our organization grows, so does our
ability to provide more children with a little more sparkle for the season. We were very proud to have raised in excess of $1000, a part of which was also donated to the Galveston County Animal Shelter.
BCSO Summer BBQ 2011
The BCSO had their annual Summer BBQ Party on July 23rd at the home of our gracious program coordinator Ms. JoAlice Whitehurst. We had an excelent turnout, plenty of food and drinks, and lots of time to cool off in JoAlice's pool.
