Galveston Beach Cleanup-2008
by Austin Elam
On the morning of February 9, 2008, the GSO and BCSO, along with other members of the UTMB community, participated in a beach cleaning as part of the Adopt-a-Beach program. Following Mardi Gras, the beaches in Galveston are always in need of a thorough cleaning, so our volunteers had quite a job to do!
Picking up trash on the beach was actually a lot of fun. The students that were cleaning the beach together had friendly contests to see who could find the strangest things on the beach. Items found included an intact tackle box, a plastic army man, a pair of pants, and a huge (~50ft) piece of rope, presumably from a passing ship. By the end of the morning, our group had cleaned an entire section of East Beach, which was a very rewarding experience. We also enjoyed the warm Galveston weather on the beach, which is always fun!
